Though the GlobalPort had undergone a facelift on their lineup, they showed no sign of unfamiliarity as they defeated Air21 on the kickoff match of the PBA Governors’ Cup 2013.
It was a showdown of imports with Markeith Cummings of Batang Pier winning it against Zach Graham of Express. Cummings posted a double-double with 37 points and 11 rebounds to lead his team to a win 101-94. GlobalPort notched the win even without their hothand Gary David, but his absence was filled in by the newcomer Jay Washington scoring 15 points.
Graham scored 31 points for the Air21 Express and KG Canaleta and Mark Isip both added 15 points, but his team fall short against the GlobalPort Batang Pier.
On the main event, the Rain or Shine has started their campaign to defend their title by winning their opponent in last year’s Finals, the SanMig Coffee Mixers. Elasto Painters’ import Arizona Reid showed his Best Import skills with 28 points and 20 rebounds, making him the best player of the game in their 79-75 win.
The former B-Meg Llamados team was unable to defend their lead which then resulted to a loss. They started with an 11-2 run but gave up an 18-5 run in the first quarter. Mixers’ import Marqus Blakely showed much energy for the team but his free throws were not helping them to win. He was 6-for-19 from the free throw line.
Every single win or loss in this shortened conference counts, because the Governors’ Cup will follow a single round robin format, where each team will face all the other teams just once. Who will lead the standings in the final conference of PBA Season 38?
